Jarno Trulli on a new track

Photos @ Paula Hietaranta

Well, it seems that F1 driver Jarno Trulli will never get rid of the paparazzi!
Paparazzi is the name of the sparkling wine of Castorani vineyard, partly owned by his family, is producing. Now we have a possibility to drink also his namesake Jarno Trulli wines in Scandinavia, too, because they are chosen to the tax free selection of Viking Line.
That was the reason we saw Jarno on a short promotional visit in Helsinki in the beginning of this week. Doing promotion is hard work not to be envied. During the press lunch the charming fellow had hardly time to eat because he had to answer politely to all kind of questions from continuing his F1 career to the wedding of Heikki Kovalainen.

Now it seems that Jarno Trulli´s F1 tracks might be a part of yesterday, but the helmet stays - this time on the label of Jarno wines. Let´s hope that it means he is a winner on the winery track as well.

Straight into the heart

Hanneriina Moisseinen: Cloth Road, 2012. Cloth, lace, textile printing,
embroidery thread, acrylic gems, wire.
Photos Finnish National Gallery/Central Art Archives/Petri Virtanen.

Sometimes you see a work of art that hits you.
And it hits you hard.
If you can, go to Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki and see Liinatie (Cloth Road) by Hanneriina Moisseinen. It is a part of the exhibition Eyeballing! The new forms of comics, but there is nothing comic in it.
The black story about a disappearing father is told with
cloth, paint and embroidery. It is pure poetry, where even
the materials have a deeper meaning. The cloths used
here are Karelian käspaikka towels which have been a
symbolic road inbetween this world and the hereafter.

The exhibition Eyeballing! is open until 9th of September 2012.

Our Estonian darlings

A week ago in Tallinn.
The pop singer Tanel Padar was charming his audience at the opening of new Viking Line Quality Outlet Store, where you can find all kind of fashion, food and drink delicacies.

Also present was the colourful celebrity Anu Saagim, the godmother of the store, who really knows what the fashionable customers need. For example Guess bags and Tommy Hilfiger summer shoes at a prize up to -70%...
Address of the store is Lootsi 8, 10151 Tallinn, and it is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm.

And today in Helsinki.
These are the last days to meet the amazing works by the Estonian artist Villu Jaanisoo – his portrait exhibition at Gallery Kalhama & Piippo Contemporary closes on Sunday.
Here you see the plywood sculpture of William Shakespeare – and the girls who wanted to see how it was made.

The eternal glow of Helene Schjerfbeck

Girl with big eyes (Karin), 1928. Watercolor and coal on paper. Villa Gyllenberg/Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation.

”The picture looked more at me than I looked at the picture, stayed in my mind.”
These words by the author Paavo Rintala are not written about Helene Schjerfbeck but they come always to my mind when I see her paintings.
This year celebrates the 150 anniversary of the birth of one of the most important icons in Finnish art. Now she is famous all over the world, but as it so often happens, during her lifetime she was not rich. There were years when she could hardly keep her house warm, nowadays her paintings are so expensive she could buy a house, even several ones.
Of the many exhibitions of her art during this year I mention only two.
This is the last week to see The Spirituality in Art - Helene Schjerfbeck exhibition at Gyllenberg Art Museum, the private museum owned by Signe and Ane Gyllenberg Foundation in Kuusisaari. It is open until Sunday May 20th, and during this last week it is open daily.

In the beginning of June Ateneum Art Museum is presenting the largest ever exhibition of Helene Schjerfbeck´s art. Check the details here: www.ateneum.fi/default.asp?showInfo=14385&docId=12532

An interesting view into her art opens the new edition of Helene Schjerfbeck Malleja Modeller Models (WSOY). The lovely book tells about her models not only in stories but also in the old photographs.

But how did the artist really look, how did she see herself?
This most touching video about the changing faces of the artist in her 13 self-portraits shows her uncompromising way to paint
